Clothing Tips
Choose a color theme that simplifies the look of your family portrait. Coordinate the clothing for all subjects in a group portrait so that one person will not stand out because the clothing is too light, too bright or with a different pattern than the rest of the group. Simplicity is the key, solid colors are the best. Avoid large or bold patterns, stripes and bright colors, they draw attention away from the face. Short sleeve shirts also draw attention away and should be avoided. Choose clothing in the same tonal ranges.
Coordinate your attire from head to toe, carefully selecting appropriate shoes, socks or stockings. For formal portraits ,dark colors are usually best. For casual portraits, barefoot can be a great look or oxford type shoes (avoid tennis shoes). Long sleeve dresses and shirts are recommended. Darker clothing tends to minimize body size (against a dark background), and light tones tend to emphasize body size (against a dark background).
For outdoor portraits choose colors in the earthtones, such as browns, forest greens, burgandys, tans, deep blues, blue jeans or khakis are always good, whites or blacks can also be a great look, although white will cause more contrast in the portrait. Always avoid oranges, bright reds or yellows, they just don't photograph well !
